13 Short Harry Potter Thoughts

I have several thoughts and theories about the Harry Potter universe that are too short to create an entire post around just that one thought. So I decided to do a list of all of my short Harry Potter thoughts.

1. I don’t think it’s fair to take Ron’s faults from all 7 books and say he wouldn’t be a good husband for Hermione. They were teenagers throughout the entire series. Who someone is as a teenager doesn’t always determine what kind of adult they will be. How many of you are proud of the person you were at 17?

2. I’ve struggled internally over the years trying to decide if the Malfoys are small “heroes” at the end, or at least turned over to the good side. But this last time rereading the series, I don’t think so. I don’t believe they care about what’s right or wrong, they care about self-preservation; and in the end, following Voldemort came at too high a cost for their personal comfort.

3. I’ve always wondered if Bellatrix felt some sort of romantic love for Voldemort. I don’t think it was always that way for her, after all, she was married once. But her husband died in Azkaban, and Voldemort was all she had left after that (yeah she also had Narcissa, but they weren’t on the same level of dedication to Voldemort).

4. In the 7^th book when Harry’s wand reacts on its own against Voldemort, and I don’t agree with Dumbledore’s explanation on why that happened. (I know JK Rowling obviously gets to choose since she is the creator of this wonderful world, but since Dumbledore calls it a theory, I think she would be ok with fans coming up with their own theories.) Dumbledore says it has something to do with the twin cores and Voldemort now having Harry’s blood in him. I personally think that it was the piece of Voldemort’s soul inside of Harry protecting itself. Because later in that same book Harry tells Ron that the Horcruxes will “put up a fight” to stay alive. (ie: the diary, the locket choked Harry and turned Ron against Harry, etc.) I know, why didn’t it protect Harry in other instances? Well, Voldemort was the one trying to kill him. Voldemort’s soul was protecting itself from Voldemort.

5. In the Deathly Hallows movie, Lavender Brown actually dies. In the book it says she is “stirring feebly” but doesn’t give any indication if she survives. I like to think that she did.

6. For me, the hints that Ron and Hermione like each other begin in the Goblet of Fire. Especially when it comes to the Yule Ball. They are given the chance to go on a date and fail miserably. Ron gives the excuse that they both need dates (like any fourteen year old would do, come up with some “valid” reason other than the truth), and Hermione is mad that he took so long to ask her. However, I still think she liked Viktor Krum. He was older, and it’s always exciting when an older guy likes you when you are a teenager. He was also foreign, and foreign guys are attractive no matter what age you are.

7. The Gryffindor Quidditch team is incredibly young. When Harry makes the team as a first year, Katie Bell is a second year, Alicia Spinnet, Angelina Johnson, and Fred and George Weasley are all third years, and Oliver Wood is a fifth year.

8. If I did my math correctly, Voldemort is about 68 years old in the Goblet of Fire. It’s pretty obvious that Voldemort is a sociopath, but did any of his followers ever think in the back of their head, “Why am I just standing here watching a 68 year old man torture a 14 year old boy? What is wrong with me?!”

9. I know that everyone mourns Fred the most – and I mourn him too, believe me – but the hardest death for me has always been Sirirus’ death. His entire story is so depressing to me. His name never gets cleared before he dies, Harry never gets to live with him, and they only had a two year relationship. The two years he is out of Azkaban he is either on the run or locked up in Grimmauld Place. His COUSIN murders him. He was the black sheep and disappointment of his family. He never found a woman to marry like Remus and James did (granted they were short marriages, but at least they were happy). I could go on, but I’ll start crying…

10. Albus Severus. No. Allow me to make this more realistic for you.

Ladies, picture the guy that you friend-zoned throughout high school. Now imagine your son naming your grandson after that guy. Did you cringe? I hope so.

11. While we are on the subject of Snape, defying Voldemort and helping save the wizarding world does not automatically excuse him from being Harry’s biggest bully for six years. Even Dumbledore admitted that Snape mistreated Harry:

“I thought Professor Snape could overcome his feelings about your father – I was wrong.” (Order of the Phoenix, pg. 833)

So Ron was actually right, Snape was not trying to help Harry at all. We learn in the 7^th book that occlumency is best accomplished using grief (which is why Snape was so amazing at it). Instead of sharing that with Harry all he does is say, “Clear your mind” over and over while bullying him about James and Sirius.

12. Narcissa Malfoy and Andromeda Tonks are sisters. Draco Malfoy and Nymphadora Tonks are cousins. Teddy Lupin is Tonks’ son and Draco’s first cousin once removed. Teddy is dating Victoire Weasley during the Epilogue; so if get married, then Draco is distantly related to a Weasley! I bet he never saw that coming!

13. The Weasley’s are my favorite family in the Harry Potter series. If I existed in the Harry Potter world I would want to marry a Weasley – preferably Bill, Charlie, or George (rest in peace Fred).

Two Thumbs Up to JK Rowling for Her Harry Potter Names!

When you read all seven of the Harry Potter books, you come across literally hundreds of names; from main characters like Harry, Hermione, and Ron to characters only mentioned in the Daily Prophet or the Muggle news. During my most recent reread of the series, I wrote down each time I came across a character’s name for the first time (book, chapter and page number). I focused on first and last names. I did this because for some time I have been interested in finding out how many characters JK Rowling created for her seven-part series. I think that this is incredible because I myself have attempted to write fiction and names are really hard; you can’t just throw names on a page, they have to fit. So my purpose is to give JK Rowling amazing credit for not only creating the number of names that she did, but also choosing the right names for each character.
